Doula/Monitrice Services

Doula
Doulas provide emotional, mental, and physical support during one of the most important times of a persons life.  Birth is something that leaves a permanent memory mark in a persons mind. 

Services:  If my care is desired after the initial interview we will schedule a home (or planned laboring site) visit prior to your due date.  Your birth plan is very important and will help guide your experience.  When we do the home visit we will address any questions or concerns that you may have.  My goal is to help my clients be prepared and to know what they envision for their birth.  Upon notification that your labor has begun I will come to the place where you are laboring and will help you to stay relaxed,work with your baby, and to labor efficiently.  I will provide any support that I can to make your birth a better experience for you and your spouse.  I will encourage you to utilize information, carefully consider all recommended procedures, and take the necessary steps to be informed.  Knowing that you have a choice is very powerful.

  • On call 24/7 for the three weeks before and after your due date (If you have your baby before or after these specified time periods I will most likely be easily reached)

Questions and Answers
  • How does a doula work with the dad?  The doula is there to support the mom and dad through their journey.  A doula can give dad tips on how to provide effective labor support, provide information for dad to work with, and can help take care of dad since he is working hard too
  • Can a doula be helpful if you get an epidural?  Yes, you never know when an epidural will not be fully effective, and even with an epidural birth is a big experience that can benefit from support.  It is still a lot of work to have a baby with an epidural and coaching will be beneficial.  Doulas help to lower the need for a medicated birth
  • What about doulas and Cesarean Sections?  C-Sections are a major abdominal surgery.  Doulas can help to lower the chance of having a C-Section performed.  They will also provide the much needed support for a women who ends up needing a C-Section performed.  Sometimes it is very hard for mom to properly nurse her baby after surgery.  Doulas can help to make nursing successful


Monitrice
What is a monitrice?  A monitrice is a doula that also can perform clinical skills. I am a student midwife working toward being a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM).  I am educated and have the equipment to perform certain services if they are desired.

Monitrice services
  • Intermittent Fetal Heart Monitoring with a Doppler during labor while at home to assess the condition of the baby (I cannot perform any clinical skills while at the hospital nor do they recognize me as being someone who is qualified)
  • Vaginal exams for determining progression of labor and fetal position
  • Palpation to determine the position of the baby
